Underground Cinema, Underground was a series of 16mm screenings of historical avant-garde and experimental films programmed by Erik Gunneson and myself. As you can see below, Erik has a much better grasp of graphic design than I do.
The first round of screenings took place at Wendy Schneider’s Coney Island Studios, in a historic basement on Madison’s East Side in August and September of 2017. You’ll notice that the year listed for each screening does not correspond to the year of production for all of the films in that screening. The concept was to have a lineup of films that could have plausibly played in an underground or experimental film screening in that year.
Erik also designed a looser format for the presentation of the films, allowing for music from the various eras, drawn from his record collection, to be played between films. Erik assembled handmade slides for a 35mm slide projector using empty slide mounts and cut-up, scratched-up 16mm and 35mm found footage.
Underground Cinema, Underground was absorbed into Mills Folly Microcinema for its Summer 2019 incarnation at maiahaus, 402 East Mifflin Street. Grant Phipps previewed the series at Tone Madison. The complete 2019 schedule and film descriptions can be found on the Arts + Literature Laboratory calendar archive.
